How it works
Mejor Caña answers one question: how much does a beer cost in each bar of València. This page explains where every price comes from and how the figures you see are computed.
Where the venues come from
The list of bars, pubs, restaurants and cafés comes from OpenStreetMap (ODbL) and Overture Maps Foundation (CDLA Permissive 2.0 / Apache 2.0), cross-checked to remove duplicates. Neighbourhood boundaries are the official ones from the Ajuntament de València (CC BY 4.0). Probable duplicates and points without a name stay hidden until someone reviews them.
Where the prices come from
- The venue's own website: prices read from its menu (HTML or PDF), with the link to the source and the date it was read. Only readings with high confidence are published; doubtful ones and chains are reviewed by hand.
- The venue itself: with a personal link we send by email, the venue declares its prices, labelled «Declared by the venue».
- Customers: anyone can send a price from a venue page or share it from their diary. Every customer price is reviewed before it is published.
We do not take any data from Google Maps, TripAdvisor, TheFork, Glovo, Uber Eats or other delivery apps.
How the figures are computed
- One value per venue: for each venue and size we take its lowest valid price. A bar with ten brands does not count ten times.
- «Caña» means caña or tubo: in many bars of València the draught caña is served in a tubo.
- Plausible range: prices below €0.50 or above €9.00 are discarded.
- Outliers: in each group, prices further than 3.5 robust deviations (MAD) from the median are discarded, with a minimum scale of €0.25 so that ordinary differences are never treated as anomalies.
- Medians, never averages: the median is weighted by freshness; the trimmed mean (10% per side) is kept for reference.
- Minimum sample: a neighbourhood, a brand or the city only get a median with at least 5 venues with a price. With fewer we say «not enough data» and, at most, show the lowest price we know.
- Freshness: a price counts in full for 90 days after it was seen or confirmed; then it fades and stops counting after 365 days. A customer confirmation resets the clock.
- Alcohol-free beers, radlers and shandies are shown on the venue but do not count in any index.
Volumes
When the venue does not say the volume, we use a typical estimate and mark it with «≈»: caña ≈ 200 ml, tubo ≈ 300 ml, doble ≈ 400 ml, tercio ≈ 330 ml, quinto ≈ 200 ml, pint ≈ 500 ml. They are conventions, not facts: price per litre shown with «≈» is approximate.
Updates
The indexes are recomputed every day and every time a price is approved. The list of venues will be refreshed monthly from OpenStreetMap and Overture.
